Installation Overview
This section describes how to plan, install, and configure Posit Workbench. Use this page to find the resources for each stage of the installation.
For a detailed installation guide for Posit Team, see the Posit Team install planner.
Before you deploy Workbench to production, set up a separate staging environment that matches your production configuration. Use the staging environment to test upgrades and configuration changes before you apply them to production.
Step 1: Review pre-installation resources
Review these resources to plan your deployment:
- Requirements: supported Linux distributions, hardware, and other prerequisites.
- Sizing and Capacity Planning: how to size the servers for your users and workloads.
- Reference Architectures: end-to-end deployment diagrams and how to choose an architecture for your environment.
If you use Posit Package Manager as the package repository for Workbench (the typical Posit Team setup), install and configure Package Manager first. Workbench then relies on it to resolve and install R and Python packages. See Posit Team installation order.
Step 2: Install Workbench
Choose the installation method that matches your environment, then follow its steps to install Workbench:
| Method | Use when |
|---|---|
| Single Linux server | You run all Workbench components on one host. Use this for smaller teams and evaluations. |
| Multiple servers | You need high availability and capacity across two or more nodes. |
| Kubernetes cluster | You run Workbench sessions in containers on a Kubernetes cluster (off-host execution). |
To install the open-source RStudio Server instead, see Install RStudio Server.
To compare these options using reference diagrams, see Reference Architectures.
Step 3: Configure Workbench
After you install Workbench, complete the Initial Configuration to secure the server, configure authentication, and set up IDEs before users sign in.
